Cricket's three formats and the tournaments that draw attention

ninewickets live cricket betting

Cricket is played in three different formats and the style of betting varies with each. T20 is the fastest — the match ends in just 20 overs, so odds shift moment to moment in live betting. In ODI, the match unfolds over 50 overs and can turn at any point, making various innings-based markets interesting. Test matches run for five days, so three outcomes are possible including a draw, and batting conditions or pitch behaviour play an important role.

The BPL season is the most popular with Bangladeshi fans — top cricketers playing at home grounds are easy to follow. Add IPL and the T20 World Cup and there is almost always a major tournament running. Bangladesh Tigers matches in ICC tournaments naturally attract the most attention.

Football and other sports betting

Alongside cricket, ninewickets also offers betting on football and other sports. In football, extra time and penalty shootouts can decide match results, so the "match result" market works differently from cricket. In cricket, over-by-over data means odds shift frequently during live betting, whereas in football odds move significantly mainly on big events like goals or cards. Betting on the sport you understand best is always the sensible choice.

All betting activity, including cricket betting, is for ages 21 and over only. Visit the Responsible Gaming page for responsible play guidelines.

Popular cricket betting markets

ninewickets offers a range of markets. A general overview of how each market works is given below.

Match Winner

The simplest market — pick which of the two teams will win. Two outcomes in T20 and ODI, three in Test (win, loss, draw).

T20 · ODI · Test

Toss Winner

Bet on which team will win the toss before the match starts. The outcome is entirely independent — winning the toss does not mean winning the match.

All Formats

Total Runs Over / Under

The bookmaker sets a target run line. Choose whether the total runs will be above (over) or below (under) that line. Odds shift as wickets fall.

T20 · ODI

Top Bowler

Predict which bowler will take the most wickets in the match. The balance of pace and spin plays a big part.

All Formats

Multi Bet

Combine selections from multiple matches into a single bet. If all selections are correct, the odds multiply. If even one is wrong, the entire bet is lost.

Multiple Events

How odds are written in three formats

Betting odds are shown in three different formats — decimal, fractional and American. The same outcome costs the same across all three formats even though they look different. Two examples below make this clear.

Example Decimal Fractional American Return on ৳1,000 bet
Team A wins (underdog) 2.25 5/4 +125 ৳2,250 (profit ৳1,250)
Team B wins (favourite) 1.50 1/2 -200 ৳1,500 (profit ৳500)

Decimal odds are the simplest — multiply your stake by the number to get your total return. Fractional (e.g. 5/4) means ৳5 profit for every ৳4 staked. In American format, "+" shows how much profit you make on ৳100, and "-" shows how much you need to stake to make ৳100 profit. If you lose, the full stake is gone.

Multi bet example

If three separate selections have decimal odds of 1.40 × 1.80 × 1.90, the combined odds come to roughly 4.79. A ৳100 bet returns ৳479 if all three selections are correct. If even one is wrong, the full ৳100 is lost. Multi bets are entertaining but carry higher risk.

These figures are examples only — they are not a guarantee of actual profit.

Live Betting — odds change the moment a wicket falls

Live In-Play

Betting continues even after the match has started — this is called in-play or live betting. In cricket it is especially fast-moving because the situation can change with every ball.

Take one example — at the 15th over a strong team is ahead. Suddenly two wickets fall — their odds of winning shorten (meaning lower payout), while the other team's odds lengthen (higher payout). From rain to the end of the powerplay to a bowling change in the death overs — everything affects the odds.

In live betting there is little time to decide, so it is worth setting your limits in advance. Read the responsible gaming guidelines to learn more.

Some practical advice before you begin

  • 01 Betting is for entertainment — it is not a source of income. Set a limit on how much you will spend per session before you start and stick to it.
  • 02 Understand the format first. In T20, the last five overs can change the whole match; in ODI, the powerplay matters. Bet on the format you know best.
  • 03 Focus on one market. New bettors often start with match winner — it is simple and straightforward.
  • 04 Odds look big in a multi bet, but every selection has to be correct. Start with small stakes to understand how it works.
  • 05 Live betting requires fast decisions — without a plan in place, there is a tendency to place larger bets on impulse.
  • 06 Regular players in the ninewickets VIP programme receive weekly cashback — this is not a guarantee of big wins, but a chance to recover a small portion of losses.

Frequently Asked Questions

T20 has only 20 overs, so odds shift quickly in live betting and the last few overs matter most. ODI offers various innings-based markets across 50 overs. Test matches have three possible outcomes — win, loss and draw. These differences directly affect betting strategy and market selection.

Decimal odds of 2.25 mean you get ৳2.25 back for every ৳1 you bet if you win. For example, a ৳1,000 bet that wins returns ৳2,250 (profit of ৳1,250 plus your original ৳1,000 stake). If you lose, the full ৳1,000 is gone. These odds are written as 5/4 in fractional format and +125 in American format.

When a wicket falls, the batting team's chances of winning generally drop, so their odds increase (meaning higher payout but greater risk). The bowling team's odds shorten as they move ahead (lower payout). In in-play betting these changes happen very fast because odds update almost in real time.

The core markets (match winner, toss, top batsman, etc.) are similar across both tournaments. The difference is familiarity — Bangladeshi bettors generally know more about BPL teams and pitch conditions. IPL offers a larger number of markets because of higher demand in international betting.

The bookmaker sets a run line — say 170 total runs in 20 overs. If you think the total will be higher, choose "over"; if lower, choose "under". The line can shift during live play as wickets fall or big shots are hit. Assess this market by considering match conditions, pitch and weather together.
